Exploring the Capabilities of Anthropic’s Claude 3
Anthropic, an AI startup backed by important venture capital, has announced the latest version of its GenAI technology, named Claude. This new generation, comprising models Claude 3 Haiku, Claude 3 Sonnet, and the most powerful, Claude 3 Opus, claims to rival OpenAI’s GPT-4 in performance.
Claude 3 is Anthropic’s first multimodal GenAI, capable of analyzing both text and images, similar to some versions of GPT-4 and Google’s Gemini.
Claude 3 can process various document types, including photos, charts, graphs, and technical diagrams. It can analyze multiple images in a single request, up to 20, allowing for comparison and contrast. However, the model has limitations in image processing, such as not identifying people and struggling with low-quality images or tasks involving spatial reasoning and object counting.
Claude 3 is designed to follow multi-step instructions better, produce structured output, and converse in languages other than English more effectively than its predecessors. It also aims to refuse to answer questions less often, thanks to a more nuanced understanding of requests. In the future, Claude 3 will cite sources for its answers, allowing users to verify them.
Despite these advancements, Claude 3 shares some issues common to other GenAI models, like bias and hallucinations. It cannot search the web and is limited to data from before August 2023. While multilingual, it’s not as fluent in certain low-resource languages compared to English.
Anthropic plans frequent updates to Claude 3, enhancing its capabilities and allowing it to interact with other systems and code interactively. The company is also exploring the potential of constitutional AI, a training technique aimed at aligning AI with human intentions using a set of guiding principles.
Claude 3 is available now on various platforms, with pricing based on input and output tokens. Anthropic’s long-term goal is to develop AI self-teaching algorithms for various applications, competing with other major players in the AI field.
